... Ninty-two Years in the Making

Since 1917, the Franconia Conference Mennonites, who had a long and strong tradition of mutual care, founded the Eastern Mennonite Home. Staff and residents lived together in the simple yet substantial building on the edge of Souderton, Pa. From 1927 to1952, the home was filled to capacity with 75 residents. In 1965, the addition of a one-story, eighteen-bed infirmary wing was opened. In 1976, expanded nursing care was needed and there was a demand for living space. In 1981, the apple orchard gave way to a new residence wing. In 2001, the addition of an ever growing retirement facility began. Now, SMH is an ever more diverse population in a full range of residential and health care facilities.

Today, SMH continues to be a community of invitation and a ministry of the Mennonite Church that has been ministering to all elements of wellness; mind, body and soul. When you experience the joy of these elements, you truly understand the philosophy that has enabled SMH to be resident focused and community oriented, resulting in the quality and continuum of care for which it has become known.
